Normally, noise evaluation is carried out by using the sound pressure level with type A frequency weighting.
However, the aspect of sound quality is increasingly also being employed to evaluate the sound produced by various types of products.
Parameters for evaluating sound quality, such as loudness, sharpness, and roughness are now widely used. These parameters can be measured with the system consisting of measurement microphones and preamplifiers, the multi-channel signal analyzer SA-02 series unit, and sound quality evaluation software.
Loudness refers to the subjective volume of a sound as perceived by human hearing. Loudness calculated as an intensity parameter according to ISO 532 is used to evaluate this quality.
Sharpness is a parameter describing the harsh metallic quality contained in high frequency components.
Roughness is an esthetic parameter evaluating changes in modulation frequency, modulation ratio, and sound pressure level.
● Tonal evaluation
When a single frequency is dominant in a sound, it will be perceived as conspicuous. The tonal evaluation assesses the intensity of the prominent frequency. For a constant-level type sound source, it is referred to as tone-to-noise ratio or prominence ratio.
